If you’ve been navigating the world of weight loss, you’ve likely encountered a lot of noise. Between viral social media trends and "magic" supplements, it’s hard to know what is evidence-based and, more importantly, what is safe.
At Brook Aesthetics, our approach is different. As a Pharmacist Prescriber trained in the National Medical Weight Loss Programme (NMWLP), I oversee a clinical service that treats weight management as a vital part of your overall healthcare—not just a number on a scale.
Here are the most common questions we hear in our Lisburn clinic about our medical weight management journey.
1. What does it mean to be a Pharmacist Prescriber in this field?
It means your journey is led by a healthcare professional with advanced clinical training in pharmacology and patient safety. While I am not a GP, my background allows me to perform deep clinical assessments, understand how different health conditions interact, and manage prescription-based treatments with a high level of precision.
Being NMWLP-trained means I follow a nationally recognised, holistic framework that prioritises long-term health over short-term "crashes."
2. What happens during the initial assessment?
We don’t believe in "one size fits all." Your first visit is about data and safety. We don’t require blood tests at our clinic, but we do take a comprehensive set of "clinical markers" to build your profile:
Blood Pressure: To ensure your cardiovascular health is supported.
BMI (Body Mass Index): To determine clinical eligibility (typically a BMI of 30+, or 27+ with weight-related health issues).
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate): We calculate the energy your body needs to function at rest, which helps us tailor your nutritional plan accurately.
Waist Measurement: This helps us assess visceral fat, which is often a more important indicator of health risk than weight alone.
3. Is this just about a prescription?
Absolutely not. A prescription is only one potential tool in the box. The NMWLP is a holistic programme. If you are suitable for a medical intervention, it is always paired with:
Nutritional Guidance: Focused on sustainable, enjoyable eating.
Behavioural Support: Understanding your relationship with food and "hunger noise."
Lifestyle Coaching: Small, manageable changes that actually stick.
Why Choose a Clinically-Led Programme?
The "DIY" Approach | The Brook Aesthetics Clinical Service |
Guesswork on calorie needs | BMR-based personalised targets |
No medical safety net | Monitored by a Pharmacist Prescriber |
Focus on "the finish line" | Focus on metabolic health and maintenance |
High risk of "yo-yoing" | NMWLP-aligned long-term habit change |
4. How long does the programme last?
Weight management is a marathon, not a sprint. We don’t promote "rapid" or "excessive" weight loss, as this often leads to muscle loss and a slowed metabolism. Instead, we focus on steady, sustainable progress. Most patients stay on the programme for several months, with regular check-ins to monitor their progress and adjust their plan.
5. Am I a candidate for the programme?
As a healthcare professional, I only accept patients into the programme if it is clinically safe for them. Generally, we look for individuals who have struggled to maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise alone and who meet the BMI criteria mentioned above. During our consultation, we’ll dive into your medical history to ensure any treatment we discuss is the right fit for your body.
