Looking after your skin during the winter months

Updated: 8 hours ago

Winter is here, and you've probably noticed your skin feeling tighter, flakier, or even a bit irritated. The combination of cold outdoor air, low humidity, harsh winds, and indoor heating can strip your skin of its natural moisture, weakening the skin barrier and leading to dryness, itchiness, or redness.

But don't worry — with a few simple adjustments to your routine, you can keep your skin soft, hydrated, and glowing all season long. Here's your practical guide to looking after your skin in the winter months.

This side-by-side comparison shows just how dramatically winter can affect your skin: on the left, dry and flaky; on the right, smooth and hydrated after proper care.

1. Switch to Gentler Cleansing

Hot showers feel amazing in winter, but they strip away your skin's natural oils. Keep showers or baths short (5-10 minutes) and use lukewarm (not hot) water. Opt for a gentle, hydrating cleanser — look for ones with ingredients like glycerin, ceramides, or hyaluronic acid instead of harsh, foaming soaps.

Apply cleanser mainly where needed (face, hands, etc.) and avoid over-washing your body every day.

2. Moisturise Immediately and Often

The golden rule of winter skincare: moisturise right after bathing or washing while your skin is still damp to lock in hydration.

Switch from lightweight lotions to richer cream-based or ointment-style moisturisers (think thicker textures you scoop from a jar). Key ingredients to look for include:

  • Ceramides (to repair the skin barrier)

  • Hyaluronic acid (to draw in moisture)

  • Shea butter or squalane (for deep nourishment)

  • Petroleum jelly (like Aquaphor) for very dry patches or lips

Apply generously to your face, hands, body, and especially lips multiple times a day.

A cozy moment of applying cream — make this a daily ritual for that soft, nourished feel.

Moisturising straight after a shower traps water in your skin — one of the most effective winter habits.

3. Layer Your Products for Extra Hydration

Build a simple winter routine:

  • Cleanse gently

  • Apply a hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid or similar)

  • Seal with a rich moisturiser

  • At night, add a facial oil or thicker balm for overnight repair

Don't forget sunscreen during the day — UV rays are still present even on cloudy winter days, and snow can reflect them.

4. Protect Against the Elements

  • Wear gloves and scarves to shield hands and face from cold winds.

  • Use a thick lip balm or ointment on lips to prevent chapping.

  • Layer up with protective clothing when outdoors.

5. Add Humidity Indoors

Central heating dries out the air, worsening skin issues. Run a humidifier in your bedroom or living areas to maintain 40-60% humidity — your skin (and even your sinuses) will thank you.

A humidifier adds moisture to the air while you sleep, helping combat that tight, dry feeling overnight.

6. Hydrate from the Inside Out

Drink plenty of water, eat hydrating foods (soups, fruits like oranges, veggies), and consider omega-rich foods (fish, nuts) to support your skin barrier.

Quick Winter Skincare Checklist

  • Short, lukewarm showers

  • Gentle, hydrating cleanser

  • Rich cream moisturiser (apply on damp skin)

  • Humidifier + sunscreen daily

  • Gloves, scarves, and lip balm for protection

Follow these tips, and your skin should stay comfortable and radiant despite the cold. If dryness persists or becomes painful/cracked, consult a dermatologist — it could need extra support.

Stay cozy out there, and here's to soft, happy winter skin!
